Remote Work the career killer?

Is Remote Work Killing Your Career?

This week, we’re reacting to some viral discourse that has the tech world divided: Emma Grede’s take on remote work. Is “work from home culture” actually a career killer? We’re diving into that, plus the H-1B crisis in Texas and the harsh reality of internal promotions.

The Proximity Penalty

Entrepreneur Emma Grede recently claimed that remote work is a “career killer,” particularly for women, because high-level careers require proximity and visibility.

Our Take: Visibility is non-negotiable. Whether you are remote or in-office, you have to be seen. Studies show that remote workers are 31% less likely to be promoted than their in-office peers. If you’re remote, you have to be intentional: speak up on every call, fix processes, and make sure leadership knows your face.

The H-1B “Ghost Office” Crisis

Over in Frisco, Texas, there is a major stir regarding “ghost offices”. Investigative reports have found IT staffing companies undercutting American labor by registering H-1B workers to empty office suites to manipulate labor condition applications. It’s a messy situation that has locals calling for fraud investigations at city council meetings every week.

The “Internal” Salary Trap

Here is a harsh truth your recruiter won’t tell you: the salary range you see posted for a job does not apply to you if you are an internal candidate. The 10% Rule: Most companies require special approval for any internal raise above 10-15%.

The Jump: Often, you have to leave a company and come back as an external hire just to get the market rate you deserve.

Cybercrime’s Youngest Recruits

We took a look at the massive PowerSchool hack, where the sensitive data of 60 million students was compromise. Shockingly, the gateway for many of these young hackers is Roblox. Bad actors are masquerading as kids on these platforms to lure elite gamers into cybercrime with the promise of crypto. Parents, stay vigilant about who your kids are chatting with on these consoles.

Level Up Your Career

Stuck in the mid-$60k range? It might be because you’re only applying for mid-$60k jobs. Don’t let a lack of a specific degree hold you back—if you have the skills, you can command the salary.

How I can help:

Coaching & Consults: I’ve helped hundreds of people break into the “blue team” (incident response/SOC analysts)

Negotiation: Most people are scared to negotiate because they lack the skillset. Let’s fix that.
