Hey Reader, In year 2026 bare minimum will not cut it to work in a SOC Earlier this week, I had a call with a person who said they have been applying to SOC roles but getting rejected. They were currently in a helpdesk role, and looking to level up their career. First thing first…per usual they had a bad resume: But what they believed made them “qualified” for the role was they had the CompTIA Security+ ,CompTIA CySA+, a helpdesk role, and a security clearance After this we proceed to review my SOC analyst interview questions. They couldn’t answer the easiest question on the form(this is a problem). Now I know this looks like i’m bashing them but I’m not This all connects to what I have been saying on my channel for years multiple choice cybersecurity certifications do not mean anything if you can pass them without experience But this story will not be all bad. Since I have met with 100s of people like him over the last 6 years I shifted their strategy, to be able to increase their income in a more feasible way. They were currently making $50k and I showed them how to find remote helpdesk jobs that paid $70k+ after that I addvised them to pivot either into system administration or IAM They were appreciative of the advice and happy they had an easier path to reach their goals Alot of you are trying to hit homeruns, when you need to just hit the ball to get to first base If you are tyring to get into cybersecurity then you should Research the SKILLS needed to do the positions vs certifications. Most certifications are paper weights If the person in the story reminds you of yourself then book your call here |
